I guess it's more just Badminton Fever. 2 Sundays ago, a few of us, Eliza, Adrian, Mil, Vin, Kimberly and I (oh.. and Eli's brother and his friend) got a hold of tickets for the Mixed Team badminton finals. It was a Gold medal match between England and Malaysia.
All we had at first was a lil Malaysian flag on a stick, and a bigger one, oh.. and i had on my t'shirt "Go Malaysia!" But at the entrance of the hall, we bumped into a group of supporters who
gave us a bunch of flags as well.
Before I describe the matches, for those who aren't aware of it (myself included), the scoring format for badminton has changed. It's still the best of 3 sets, but now each set consists of 21 points. And it's a little similar to PingPong, in that, you don't have to be serving to win a point.
Also, in Doubles, there's no longer a 2nd server.
The first match was the mixed doubles, and England beat us in straight sets, which wasn't a surprise. But the next match was the Men's Singles, and our representative was Lee Chong Wei (world #2) who disposed of the english player with ease. The 3rd match was one that put all of us in the edge of our seats. The Women's Singles. The English (Tracy Hallam) was seeded first, and we were only 3rd (Wong Mew Choo) ( i think). The first set went up to 29 points if i remember correctly. Similar to tennis, when the players are tied at match point, there's a deuce of 2 points, and it continues untill someone scores 2 consecutive points. And it went on forever. We (Mew Choo) won the first set, then lost the 2nd by 2 points, then barely won the 3rd to win the match. Both players were totally depleted of energy, the Malaysian coach even had to help Mew Choo carry her things.
But more importantly, the supporters were exhausted as well. We barely had any energy left to cheer for the next match, which was the Men's doubles. Which we won in straight sets anyway.
Frequent cheers of "Malaysia Boleh" as well as cheers and shouts of the players' names, filled the stadium. But among the 8 of us, only Eli and I were jumping and shouting, much to the embarassment of the other 6 who pretended they didn't know us. Also, we had a pretty good seat, almost directly behind the court. And.... in the midst of our frantic cheering, Eli's mum smsed her sayin she's watching us on TV at that moment (must've been Astro). Hehe..
Back to the matches, after we won the 4th match, the Gold medal had been determined. We jumped about waving our flags with pride, and reporters were asking all of us supporters to gather so they can take a group photo of us (been checking the Star website.. havn't seen it yet.. a bit disappointed).
Straight after that was the medal presentation ceremony. That was when we all realized how long ago it's been since we last sang 'Negaraku!' Anyway, the first photo is of the athletes parading towards the podium. In the first photo the girl in front is Mew Choo. I think you can figured out which head is mine in the crowd.
After all that, we tried to get the players to come out and take photos with us. Eli was shouting out Lee Chong Wei's name (Men's Singles), and he walked towards us. When he got to us he took one look at Kimberly, and gave her, his bouquet of flowers (each medalist were presented with a b ouquet of flowers). Man... talk about tough competition... Anyway, we had photo opportunities with some of the players, as well as their autographs.
After that, i had been frantically searching for tickets to the individual finals... but to no avail... :(
